New Dhaka Times: Desk Report
In Bangladesh, district police have arrested ride-share motorcycle driver Md. Shahporan for raping a female passenger in a secluded area. On Sunday (June 1), Shahporan was presented before Senior Judicial Magistrate Meshkat Islam’s court, where he voluntarily confessed to the rape under Section 164.
Earlier, on Saturday night (May 31), Palash police arrested him while he was fleeing from Keraniganj. Shahporan (30) is the son of Abdul Ali from Taranagar Bottoli Dakshin Para, under Keraniganj Police Station in Dhaka.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Md. Anwar Hossain stated that on May 28, a female passenger, a mother, boarded a ride-share from Mirpur 12 towards Shyamoli. Around 9:15 PM, instead of taking her to her destination, driver Shahporan diverted to a secluded spot beside the Panchdona-Tongi highway in Palash Upazila of Narsingdi—next to a culvert in front of Elite Steel Limited—where he raped her.
Not only did he assault her, the accused also snatched the victim’s cash and extorted money from her family through mobile financial services. He also threatened to kill her at the scene.
After the incident, the woman called the national emergency service 999. Police responded immediately, rescued her, and sent her to a hospital for treatment. On May 29, the victim filed a case at Palash Police Station, naming Shahporan as the main accused and identifying two other unknown individuals as accomplices.
Following the incident, under the direction of Superintendent of Police Md. Abdul Hannan, police from the station, detective branch, and related units launched an operation to arrest the accused. Finally, on Saturday night, Shahporan was arrested from Keraniganj and sent to court on Sunday.
