Police have detained 13 activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations while they were attempting to hold a political rally in the Nijkhamar area of Khulna, Bangladesh. One marcher was injured amid resistance from local residents, and the others were caught by the locals and handed over to the police.
The 13 individuals were detained on Wednesday afternoon from Khulna city’s Nijkhamar area. According to police sources, the detainees came from Chuknagar, Kharnia, and surrounding regions of Dumuria Upazila in Khulna, and all are politically affiliated with the Awami League and related organizations.
According to several local residents, a group of 15–20 people gathered in Nijkhamar around noon and began chanting slogans under the Awami League banner. In response, locals quickly chased them, and 13 individuals were caught while trying to flee. Later, locals informed the police, and a team from Labanchora Police Station of Khulna Metropolitan Police took them into custody.
Police further reported that one marcher was injured after being beaten by locals and was admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital. Md. Yusuf Ali, Inspector (Investigation) of Labanchora Police Station, said, “The detainees are not local residents; they came from outside to hold the rally. They failed due to local resistance. A case is underway against them, and they will be sent to court after legal proceedings.”
