Government Declares “New Bangladesh Day” and “Shaheed Abu Sayeed Day”

The government has declared August 5 as “New Bangladesh Day” and July 16 as “Shaheed Abu Sayeed Day,” both officially included in a notification issued by the Cabinet Division.

Following the political transition on August 5, 2024, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus assumed responsibility as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government on August 8.
The government has declared the date of the formation of the interim government as “New Bangladesh Day.”

Additionally, July 16—the day student Abu Sayeed was shot dead by police during a mass protest in Rangpur—has been declared as “Shaheed Abu Sayeed Day.”

On Wednesday, the Cabinet Division issued two separate circulars announcing these new commemorative days.

The notifications request all relevant ministries, departments, and agencies to observe the days properly each year.

Both days have been classified under category ‘B’ of the Cabinet Division’s circular on the observance of national and international days.
