From January to June this year, a total of 1,555 women, including 736 girl children, were subjected to violence in Bangladesh. This information has been published in a report by the Bangladesh Mahila Parishad.
According to the report, 481 women, including 345 children, were raped during this period. Among them, 106 women, including 62 children, were gang-raped. Moreover, 17 women, including 10 children, were murdered after being raped. In the past six months, 51 women, including 35 children, have been victims of sexual harassment. 34 women, including 25 children, have been victims of stalking. There were 320 cases of femicide, of which 61 were children.
The report was prepared by analyzing news reports from 15 national daily newspapers archived by the central Legal Aid Sub-Committee of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad. It was released to the media on July 1.
The report further states that in the month of June alone, 203 women, including 87 girl children, were victims of violence. Of them, 65 women, including 43 children, were raped—8 women, including 5 children, were gang-raped. 3 women, including 2 children, were murdered after being raped. There were attempted rapes on 7 children.
In June, 2 women committed suicide due to stalking. In addition, 68 women, including 13 children, were killed for various reasons. 11 women, including 2 children, died under mysterious circumstances. One woman was attacked with acid, while 3 women suffered burns, 2 of whom died.
Furthermore, in June, one woman was tortured due to dowry-related violence. Six women were physically assaulted in incidents of domestic violence. 22 women, including 6 children, died by suicide. Two children were abducted. One woman was subjected to cybercrime. There were 2 incidents of child marriage. An additional 9 women, including 7 children, experienced other forms of abuse.
