Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
Assalamu Alaikum dear friends,
For a long time, I have desired to compile Allah’s commands and prohibitions in the Qur’an. As Muslims, we believe, but many of us still do not fully know what Allah has commanded for us and what He has forbidden.
In the first part of this effort, I have compiled the prohibited or haram matters. I have tried to attach the corresponding Qur’anic verses with each prohibited matter, so that Allah’s words can be presented directly without any personal opinion.
In the next phase, InshaaAllah, I will compile the verses related to Allah’s commands.
I hope this effort will be beneficial for all of us and will help us to follow Allah’s guidance.
1 – Committing Shirk – (Punishment is directly Hell)
Associating partners, idol worship, considering others besides Allah as worthy of worship, validating any law alongside Allah’s command,
Allah says…
“And when Luqman said to his son while advising him, ‘O my son! Do not associate anything with Allah. Indeed, associating partners with Allah is a great injustice.'” 31:13
2 – Kufr, Breaking Promises – (Punishment is directly Hell)
Allah says…
“And those who disbelieve and deny Our signs – they will be companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.” 2:39
“But if they break their oaths after making a covenant and defame your religion, then fight the leaders of disbelief – for indeed, there are no oaths to them – so that they might cease. Their punishment is only Hell, and it is the worst destination.” 9:12
3 – Opposing Allah and His Messenger – (Punishment is directly Hell)
Allah says…
“And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger and transgresses His limits – He will admit him to the Fire to abide eternally therein, and he will have a humiliating punishment.” 4:14
4 – Hypocrisy – (Punishment is directly Hell)
Allah says…
“Indeed, the hypocrite men and women will be in the lowest depth of the Fire, and never will you find for them a helper. Allah has cursed them, and for them is an enduring punishment.” 9:68
5 – Illegal sex, adultery (Zina) – (Punishment is directly Hell)
Allah says…
“And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse – and whoever should do that will meet a penalty.
The punishment will be multiplied for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein humiliated.” 25:68–69
6 – Homosexuality is a transgression – (Punishment is directly Hell)
Allah says…
“And Lut said to his people, ‘Do you commit immorality while you see? Do you indeed approach men with desire instead of women? Rather, you are a transgressing people!'” 29:28–29
7 – Consuming Riba (Interest/Usury) excessively – (Punishment is directly Hell)
Allah says…
“O you who have believed, do not consume usury, doubled and multiplied, but fear Allah that you may be successful. And fear the Fire which has been prepared for the disbelievers.” 3:130–131
“And their taking of usury while they had been forbidden from it, and their consuming of people’s wealth unjustly. And We have prepared for the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.” 4:161
8 – Rights of orphans and heirs – (Punishment is directly Hell)
Allah says…
“Indeed, those who devour the property of orphans unjustly are only consuming fire into their bellies. And they will be burned in a Blaze.” 4:10
“And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger and transgresses His limits – He will put him into the Fire to abide eternally therein, and he will have a humiliating punishment.” 4:11–14
9 – Slandering, insulting, mocking, criticizing, backbiting – (Punishment is directly Hell)
Allah says…
“Woe to every scorner and mocker – No! He will surely be thrown into Al-Hutamah!” 104:1–9
“And those who launch a charge against chaste women and produce not four witnesses (to support their allegation), flog them with eighty stripes; and do not ever accept their testimony – for such men are wicked transgressors.” 24:4
10 – Spreading chaos and mischief – (Punishment is directly Hell)
Allah says…
“Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment.” 5:33
- Judging/Deciding Outside the Qur’an Is Forbidden
Allah says…
“And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed – then it is they who are the disbelievers.” [5:44]
“And those who disbelieve and deny Our signs – they will be companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.” [2:39] - Giving Less in Measurement (Punishment is Directly Hell)
Allah says…
“Woe to those who give less [than due].” [83:1]
(Read the full Surah to understand more) - Practicing Magic (Punishment is Directly Hell)
Allah says…
“They followed what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon – Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, ‘We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic].’ But they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah. And they learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased it would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew.” [2:102] - Oppressors, Wrongdoers, and Their Supporters
Usurping others’ wealth, bribery, conspiracy, unjust rule, supporting injustice, depriving rightful rights, oppression (Punishment is directly Hell)
Allah says…
“Except those who believe, do righteous deeds, remember Allah much, and defend themselves after being wronged. And those who wrong [others] will come to know by what a [great] reverse they will be overturned!” [26:227]
“And do not incline toward those who do wrong, lest the Fire touch you. And you would not have besides Allah any protectors; then you would not be helped.” [11:113]
“O you who have believed, do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly but only [in lawful] business by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves [or one another]. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful.
And whoever does that in aggression and injustice – then We will drive him into a Fire. And that, for Allah, is [always] easy.” [4:29–30] - Killing Intentionally
Killing a believer knowingly, or killing polytheists who have not broken a treaty (Punishment is directly Hell)
Allah says…
“But whoever kills a believer intentionally – his recompense is Hell, wherein he will abide eternally, and Allah has become angry with him and has cursed him and has prepared for him a great punishment.” [4:93] - Transgression, Arrogance, Even If They Accept Allah’s Verses (Punishment is directly Hell)
Allah says…
“For them will be beds of Hell and over them coverings [of fire]. And thus do We recompense the wrongdoers.” [7:41]
“And your Lord says, ‘Call upon Me; I will respond to you.’ Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.” [40:60]
“So enter the gates of Hell to abide eternally therein.” [16:29] - Mockery, Calling by Bad Names, Ridicule, Belittling
Allah says…
“O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them. Nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one’s] faith. And whoever does not repent – then it is those who are the wrongdoers.” [49:11] - Backbiting, Assumption, Suspicion, Spying
Allah says…
“O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.” [49:12] - Stealing
Allah says…
“[As to] the thief, male and female, cut off their hands in recompense for what they committed as a deterrent [punishment] from Allah. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.” [5:38] - Lying, False Testimony
Allah says…
“O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.” [2:135] - Breaking Oaths
“Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families, or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [or afford it] – then a fast of three days [is required]. That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn. But guard your oaths. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be grateful.” [5:89] - Intoxicants, Gambling, Fortune Telling
Allah says…
“O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.” [5:90–92] - Forbidden Animals – No Direct Mention of Hell, But If One Rejects Arrogantly or Transgresses, Then He Is from the People of Hell
Allah says…
“Say, I do not find within that which was revealed to me [anything] forbidden to one who would eat it unless it be a dead animal or blood spilled out or the flesh of swine – for indeed, it is impure – or it be [that slaughtered in] disobedience, dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit] – then indeed, your Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.” [6:145] - Killing Children for Fear of Poverty
Allah says…
“And do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We provide for them and for you. Indeed, their killing is ever a great sin.” [17:31] - Marrying Those Forbidden in Qur’an
Allah says…
“Prohibited to you [for marriage] are your mothers, your daughters, your sisters, your father’s sisters, your mother’s sisters, your brother’s daughters, your sister’s daughters, your [milk] mothers who nursed you, your sisters through nursing, your wives’ mothers, and your step-daughters under your guardianship [born] of your wives unto whom you have gone in – but if you have not gone in unto them, there is no sin upon you – and [also prohibited are] the wives of your sons who are from your [own] loins, and that you take [in marriage] two sisters simultaneously, except for what has already occurred. Indeed, Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful.
And [also prohibited are] married women except those your right hands possess. [This is] the decree of Allah upon you.” [4:23–24] - Arrogance, Walking with Pride Thinking Oneself to Be Great
Allah says…
“And do not turn your face away from people in arrogance, nor walk in pride upon the earth. Indeed, Allah does not like the arrogant and boastful.” [Luqman: 18]
“Indeed, Allah does not like the one who is self-deluded and boastful.” [An-Nisa: 36]
Final Words
Since I am only human, I am not above error.
So first I seek forgiveness from Allah. And if you find any mistake, kindly correct me with the proper Qur’anic verse.
I have shown many verses where the punishment of Hell is directly mentioned.
There are also many verses where Hell is not directly mentioned, but it is clear from the meaning.
If someone ignores or disbelieves in these verses and commits those actions, then surely he is from the people of Hell. Otherwise, Allah knows best what punishment awaits.
But Allah has said, He may forgive all sins except shirk.
Allah says…
“Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly committed a tremendous sin.” [4:48]
This is my small effort for the sake of pleasing Allah. But definitely read the Qur’an yourself along with the meaning.
In the next episode, I will bring verses regarding Allah’s commands. Then things will become clearer. Until then, pray for me so I can spread correct knowledge among you.
If anything from the prohibitions has been left out, I will add it here whenever it comes to my mind, In Sha Allah. If you notice anything, kindly comment. It is a duty upon all of us as believers.
There is no final end, because someone like me is even afraid to think of such.
There may be many more prohibitions I have missed.
Whenever I encounter them, I will add them here, In Sha Allah.
