New Dhaka Times: Desk Report

Bangladesh Mahila Parishad President Dr. Fauzia Moslem has called for a united initiative to prevent violence against women. She stated that women are now becoming the main targets in incidents such as land grabbing and temple looting.

At a human chain program organized in Muradnagar, Cumilla in protest of the rape and torture of a woman, the speakers denounced sexual and physical violence against women and called for proper justice in these crimes. They said that publishing videos of such abuse is also a serious crime. To stop such crimes, the politicization of violence against women must be stopped.

Speakers also said that the woman who was raped in Muradnagar is not alone—we are all affected with her. It is not possible for a single woman to resist such violence alone; therefore, collective resistance must be built.

They urged media professionals to ensure that, during news reporting, nothing is done that would cause the abused women to feel newly humiliated or victimized.

This human chain was organized by the Social Resistance Committee. The program, held in front of the National Press Club on July 2, was presided over by Bangladesh Mahila Parishad President Dr. Fauzia Moslem.

Earlier, on July 1, a delegation from the Social Resistance Committee visited the site demanding justice for the rape and torture incident that took place in Muradnagar. This platform is formed with the coalition of 67 women, human rights, and development organizations.

Representatives from BLAST, BRAC, ActionAid Bangladesh, Karmojibi Nari, We Can, Bangladesh National Women Lawyers’ Association, and Bangladesh Mahila Parishad were present in the visiting team.

At the human chain, representatives shared their experiences from the site visit. Speakers included Maleka Banu, Humaira Khatun, Saraban Tahura, Mousumi Kirtania, Selina Parvin, and Jona Goswami. The event was conducted by the Advocacy and Networking Director of Mahila Parishad, Jona Goswami.

At the human chain, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad General Secretary Maleka Banu said, “Although a case has been filed following the rape incident, the victim is being pressured to withdraw it. This incident clearly shows us how women are deprived of justice due to fear and pressure. If this continues, women will not get justice.”

She further stated, “The politicization of violence against women must end, and exemplary punishment must be ensured through proper investigation of the actual perpetrators.”
