New Dhaka Times: Desk Report
A shocking midnight attack has taken place at the village home of Sub-Inspector (SI) Murad Hossain in Alfadanga, Faridpur, Bangladesh. According to his family, a group of masked assailants held them at gunpoint and looted gold ornaments. However, the local police have refused to treat the incident as a robbery, instead labeling it as “theft.”
SI Murad Hossain, currently posted at Gopalganj Police Station, is the son of Nazim Uddin Mollah of Alfadanga. His mother, Momtaz Begum, reported that around 2:30 AM on Saturday night, two masked men entered the ground floor of their two-story house by breaking the Thai glass and cutting the grill of a window. They held her and her daughter-in-law at gunpoint. The attackers then snatched a pair of gold earrings weighing five annas (worth around 55,000 taka) from her daughter-in-law. According to the complaint, about 10-12 more people were stationed outside the house, acting as lookouts.
SI Murad Hossain said, “During the entire incident, the robbers kept us at gunpoint. This is nothing but a robbery. Yet, the police have refused to file a robbery case. I demand proper justice.”
When asked about the incident, SI Sujon Biswas of Alfadanga Police Station said that the police visited the scene and, based on the preliminary investigation, the incident did not appear to be a robbery. According to him, there is a difference between theft and robbery—if five or more people are involved, it is considered robbery. In this case, only two persons entered the main house, they had no significant weapons, and there was no vandalism inside the house.
SI Sujon further stated that the matter has been reported to higher authorities, who instructed to treat it as a theft. Accordingly, the victims have been asked to file a theft complaint.
